Melody Lane and A day in the Country are etchings created with a new non-toxic, non-acid intaglio technique, showing the exceptional range of mark-making and textural values available using safe materials. Ann Chernow's work is based on images from the American film genre of the 1930s and 1940s, featuring the fantasy women in the movies and the real-life women who went to see them. The artist explains, "As interpreter, I choose to create visual tension, to distance the viewer from the original image, to disturb through techniques like painterly brush work, odd cropping and other other stylistic changes. I attempt to reconstruct illusion into a familiarity that is comfortable at first glance, but which evolves into something unsettling. I aspire to transcend the furs, feathers and sparkles to reveal the human condition." (See the article "Ticket to Paradise" in Contemporary Impressions, vol. 2 #1, Spring 1994.)
